BRACHIOPLASTY – ARM LIFT – BATON ROUGE, LA
Arm Lift / Brachioplasty Overview
Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is used to reduce the amount of excess skin and tissue from the arm area. This skin is usually located between the tricep and the underarm area. It is an extremely popular procedure for post weight loss patients or for those women who feel self conscious about their flabby arms as a result of age, weight loss, or other hereditary factors. While the muscles of the upper arm can be tightened with the help of exercise, in many cases, additional attention is required to remove the excessive skin, sometimes referred to as “wings”.
To get slimmer, more youthful appearing arms, many women turn towards brachioplasty. For those who are looking for a solution, Dr. Theunissen specializes in arm lift surgery that produces excellent results, and ensures a full and healthy recovery after the procedure.
There are several causes to require an Arm Lift. Of the most common it includes:
• Weight Loss
• Aging with deterioration of skin elasticity
• Muscle Deterioration
In order to improve the appearance of sagging skin or fat on the arms, sometimes referred to as “wings”, Dr. Taylor Theunissen performs Brachioplasty (Arm Lift surgery) to help women and men regain more firm and youthful appearing arms by removing excess fat and tissue from the arms.
Ideal Candidates for an Arm Lift Procedure with Dr. Theunissen:
• Want younger, more firm looking arms

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
At our Baton Rouge, LA, location you get to take advantage of the experience and expertise of Dr. Theunissen and his well-mannered, efficient and qualified staff and nurses who are always on call to offer their support every step of the way. The purpose of a brachioplasty procedure is to treat sagging upper arms to get a more toned look. The technique involves making a minor incision, usually under the arm. The length of the incision usually depends on the amount of fat or skin that has to be removed. This is determined by Dr. Taylor before the surgery begins. That being said, in some cases where the skin is excessively loose and hanging could require an incision that runs from the armpit to the elbow. After that the excess skin is then trimmed accordingly and the underlying muscle is tightened. In some cases, even the armpit of the patient will need to be surgically tightened to give a more natural look.
DURING AND AFTER SURGERY
Patients who wish to undergo brachioplasty are put under general anesthesia. The entire procedure takes around two to four hours to complete and is generally an out-patient procedure. Once the surgery is over, the patient’s arm is covered with a compression garment. Drain tubes may also be used to prevent any chances of infection. Bruising and swelling after the procedure is normal and should not be of any concern. Patients are required to keep their arms elevated for improved blood circulation, and to prevent swelling. With the proper care your arm’s should look more youthful and firm in a short amount of time.

ARM LIFT FAQ
WILL SCARS BE VISIBLE?
Some amout of scarring should be expected whenever a patient has to go under the knife, and a Brachioplasty procedure is no different. While Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Theunissen and his team of professionals take all the necessary precautions to make sure your surgery is carried out by using the minimum amount of incisions, it is important to understand that an incision of any size will leave some scarring, which will fade with time. To provide our patients with the best results, topical ointment is used post surgery to assist in the healing process and remove any scarring. Your surgeon will also advise you to avoid exposure to the sun at least during the first year after the Brachioplasty procedure. But, at the end of the day, the benefits of having a Brachioplasty far outweigh the cons, such as post surgery scarring, which fades with time anyway.
ARM LIFT OR LIPOSUCTION?
Both these options are weighed before a procedure is selected. Dr. Theunissen will look into various factors, and will do a complete physical examination of the patient before a procedure is recommended. While liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the upper arms, the elasticity in the skin usually means that an arm lift has to be preformed to give a more natural look after the procedure is completed. This usually involves the removal of excess skin that is the cause of the flabby arms. In some cases, the patient may not even require a liposuction procedure since there will be no excess fat that is to be removed. In those patients who have good skin elasticity, only minor tightening following the liposuction may be required to attain positive results.
COMBINE PROCEDURES WITH BRACHIOPLASTY?
It is not unheard of for a surgeon to recommend Brachioplasty along with another plastic surgery procedure to get the most out of their visit. This procedure is often paired with an upper body lift, and may include a tummy tuck, breast lift or liposuction. These additional procedures will be discussed about in the initial consultation where the surgeon will decide whether an additional procedures are necessary in order for the patient to get the results they require. During the initial consultation with your surgeon all of the options and their possible outcomes will be discussed and recommendations will be made.
HOW CONTOURED WILL MY ARMS BE?
A Brachiplasty procedure is performed to remove any sagging or sagging skin in the upper arm. A great way of building muscle after surgery is through strength training. This is also a great way of adding shape to your arms. But, strength training should only be done after consulting with your surgeon and once the arms have fully recovered post surgery. To avoid any situations that may compromise the results of the Brachiplasty, patients are advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which is made up of a combination of proper diet and exercise.
Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon Dr. Theunissen and his qualified staff are committed to ensuring his patients achieve the best results from their cosmetic surgery by offering the highest level of professional care throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the procedure and on-going support.
