This may leave you feeling less desirable and sometimes even unable to wear your favorite tops and outfits. This cosmetic procedure may be performed using artificial implants or natural fat extracted from other areas of the body. The majority of women who have this treatment enjoy a renewed sense of self-image.

Taylor Theunissen, MD Plastic Surgery, performs breast augmentation surgery in Baton Rouge and also for women in New Orleans, and surrounding Louisiana areas.

As one of the best breast augmentation surgeons in Baton Rouge, Dr. Theunissen has performed countless successful and beautiful breast augmentation procedures. The surgeon creates an individualized treatment plan for each patient and utilizes advanced surgical methods.

Am I a candidate for breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation – also referred to as a ‘boob job’, is a cosmetic surgery that uses either implants or fat transfer to enhance the size and volume of a woman’s breasts. You may be a good candidate for this cosmetic treatment if:

  • You are physically and emotionally healthy.
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your natural breasts are too small.
You wish to restore breast shape or volume lost due to weight loss, pregnancy, or aging.
  • You have breast asymmetry (uneven breast size).
  • You have realistic expectations about the outcome of this procedure.

Implant Breast Augmentation

The majority of breast enhancement procedures are performed using implants. These are artificial prosthesis devices that are created using either saline or silicone materials. Breast implant surgery is an invasive technique that requires 1 to 3 hours to complete. Once the implants have been inserted, they can last for up to 20 years and most women do not require revision surgery.

Implant types

Breast implants come in three different types:

Implant size

Breast implants are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 200 cc (cubic centimeters) to 850 cc. Choosing the right size is more of an art than a science. Dr. Theunissen will take into consideration various factors to select the right fit.

These include:

  • Your body weight and size.
  • Whether you exercise regularly.
  • The current shape of your breasts.
  • Your personality.
  • The characteristics of your chest wall and breast tissue.
  • Your personal preferences regarding the shape and volume of your rebuilt breasts.

Implant profile

The breast implant profile is another important consideration to take into account. An implant ‘profile’ describes the overall silhouette of the implant, representing all three dimensions including the base diameter, volume, and projection. Moderate profile implants tend to appear more natural but lead to a less dramatic result compared to high profile implants that push the breast tissue upwards for a fuller look.

Dr. Theunissen is uniquely placed to help you wade through all these considerations and select the right breast implant. The surgeon will take the time to listen to your concerns before suggesting options that make the best sense for you. Patients can also take comfort in the fact that Dr. Theunissen is one of the very few surgeons who utilize sizers to help patients pick out their perfect breast size. Done during one of your consultation visits, this allows you to try on various sizes to see what they may look like in the final outcome. While using sizers is not an exact science and does not guarantee that is what the patient will get, they help you to artistically envision the available size options.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

While fat grafting is another option that may be used to enhance breast size, it isn’t as popular as implant breast enlargement. This procedure is typically performed on women who have excess fat in other parts of their body and are looking for a small increase in breast size. Due to certain concerns, Dr. Theunissen does not offer this type of breast augmentation. However, he performs fat grafting techniques for corrective uses (e.g. to enhance symmetry and uniformity after breast cancer reconstruction).

Types of breast augmentation incisions

Baton Rouge plastic surgeon Dr. Taylor Theunissen specializes in a number of breast implant incision techniques to suit the needs of different patients.

Inframammary Incision

This is the most common incision technique during breast implant surgery. Dr. Theunissen will create a 1 to 2” long incision on the underside of the breast and close to the rib cage. This allows the surgeon to fully visualize the breast tissue and chest muscle during implant placement while also concealing the resulting scar.

Periareolar Incision

This is a breast augmentation incision that is created around the lower half of the areola. Plastic surgeons will typically explore this option for patients who lack a well-defined breast fold to go with the inframammary incision. The resulting scar is concealed within the natural skin color change of the areola.

Transaxillary Incision

This is the only incision technique that does not result in visible scarring on the breast. The surgeon will create the incision in the armpit. Keep in mind though that this technique may only be used to insert an empty saline implant and is thus not as common as the inframammary and periareolar incisions.

What to expect from Dr. Theunissen

Dr. Taylor Theunissen has performed numerous breast augmentation procedures, helping women in Baton Rouge and other Louisiana areas to improve their quality of life. The surgeon takes each patient case as unique and creates a personalized surgical plan to yield the desired aesthetic outcome. The surgeon utilizes the latest surgical advances to perform safe, efficient cosmetic procedures. Notably, Dr. Theunissen also uses the Keller Funnel method that enables him to perform the “No-Touch” breast augmentation.

Some of the benefits of this “No-Touch” technique include the following:

  • Faster surgery time – due to easier insertion of the implant
  • Smallest scar possible – due to easier implant insertion method
  • The “No-Touch” technique results in a huge decrease in chances of infection
87% decrease in the risk for capsular contracture
  • Decreases chances of needing a breast revision

Recovery after Breast Augmentation

The recovery period after breast implant surgery will vary from patient to patient based on the size and type of the implant, the incision that was chosen, and the patient’s overall ability to heal. Patients can expect to feel tired over the first few days and are thus advised to get sufficient rest. You may also experience some pain and soreness in the days following the surgery. Dr. Theunissen will provide pain medication and antibiotics to alleviate the discomfort and prevent an infection. Many patients experience chest tightness before the implants and skin adjust together. This is not something you should worry about. You should wear a surgical bra and refrain from engaging in any strenuous activities until after full recovery. Most patients are able to resume routine work within 3 weeks. However, it may take up to 2 months before you are able to resume those intense workouts. As a rule of the thumb, adhere to the surgeon’s aftercare instructions in order to ensure a quick and uneventful recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast augmentation vs breast lift?

An augmentation breast surgery is a procedure for enlarging the size of the breasts whereas a breast lift is a procedure to lift the breast in order to achieve a firmer and more symmetrical look. While both are separate and common surgery procedures, you may be able to have these surgeries combined together so you can achieve a comprehensive outcome. This will be discussed in your consultation at Theunissen Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Baton Rouge LA. If you are visiting from out of town, feel free to check out our visitor page.

How long does it take to recover from breast augmentation?

Because each woman’s body is unique, the recovery duration following augmentation mammoplasty will vary. Most patients can however expect to get back to routine work after about 3 weeks. You will be asked to wait until after full recovery – which can take up to three months – before you can engage in physical exercise and strenuous activities.

How painful is breast augmentation?

Breast enlargement is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the US. Millions of women have successfully undergone this treatment over the last few years alone. While most women are concerned about pain, this treatment is not as painful as you might think. The pain is in fact so minimal that it can be alleviated using OTC pain medication such as Tylenol and Advil.

When can I sleep on my side after breast augmentation?

Most people are used to sleeping on their side because it is more comfortable. But this is a no-no after breast enlargement surgery. Sleeping on your side could put pressure on your treatment areas and negatively impact the result of your cosmetic breast surgery. Your plastic surgeon will recommend that you sleep on your back with the upper body slightly elevated. This position can be easily achieved by sleeping on a recliner or using a stack of pillows.

What type of bra to wear after breast augmentation?

Immediately after the surgery, you will be provided with a medical-grade compression garment that should be worn for up to a month. Wearing the right bra after this initial duration is important in order to ensure proper recovery and a desirable outcome. Most surgeons recommend that you select a supportive sports bra that will help the breasts settle properly and facilitate the healing process. Your surgeon’s team should help you settle on the right size and fabric when shopping for a sports bra.

How long after breast augmentation can I swim?

Your plastic surgeon will provide detailed after-care instructions to help you ease your recovery after augmentation mammoplasty. Although you might feel like you are ready for the pool a bit earlier, the general rule of thumb is to wait for a minimum of four weeks. This is important so you give your skin enough time to heal and rebuild its water resistance and protective properties.

How long after breast augmentation can I drive?

If you are used to commuting to work or running your own errands, it is common to be curious about how long it should take before you can go behind the wheel again. This will depend on a variety of factors, including whether you are taking prescription pain meds. A general rule of the thumb is to wait until after you are done with your prescription drugs before you can drive again. This should be about two weeks. It is important that you get a green light from your plastic surgeon before you get behind the wheel again.

When to start massaging after breast augmentation?

Massaging your breasts after augmentation mammoplasty can be beneficial to help reduce the formation of a scar tissue capsule around the implant. It also helps heal the incision much quicker and keeps the breasts soft and flexible. Most practitioners will recommend that you commence daily massages after the first week. Your doctor should let you know how to effectively massage your breasts for optimal impact.

How long until I need to replace my implants?

Modern breast implants can last for up to 15 years. Implants do not need to be removed unless there are signs of breast deformity, leaking, or rippling. Saline implants tend to be deflated if they leak. Women who have silicone implants will need to attend routine MRI scans to ensure that the implant is working as expected (and that there are no leakages). Dr. Theunissen and his qualified staff are committed to ensuring that patients achieve optimal plastic surgery results from any cosmetic surgeries by offering the highest level of professional care throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the procedure and post-surgery support.

Can silicone implants rupture or leak?

While there are some negative notions about using silicone implants, including the risk of leakages and other complications. These concerns have become a thing of the past with today’s technological advances. Modern silicone implant shells are created from durable material and are considered to be much safer than the more conventional saline models. Furthermore, the use of silicone implants has been approved by the FDA. The majority of breast implant surgeries are completed using this type of implant. So while there is a small risk of leakage, it isn’t so pronounced as to dissuade you from getting this type of implant.

How to avoid capsular contracture in breast augmentation?

Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications after breast augmentation. One of the best ways to minimize the risk of this side effect is to discuss the surgical approach with your plastic surgeon. Implants that are completely placed under the chest muscle result in a 4-8% lifetime risk of capsular contracture. This is compared to a 12 – 18% lifetime risk for implants that are placed over the chest muscle. Gently massaging the breast after the first week of recovery is another great way to prevent capsular contracture that has been proven by major studies.

Do scars from breast augmentation go away?

Scarring is one of the leading concerns for women who are considering a breast enlargement procedure. Like any other surgical procedure, augmentation mammoplasty involves incisions that will eventually turn into scars. Most seasoned surgeons, however, make a point to conceal scarring under the crease of the breast and in other areas where it is hardly noticeable. Dr. Theunissen also keeps incisions to a minimum and enrolls his breast enlargement patients into a comprehensive scar care program to ensure that scars fade well over time.
