How do chemical peels work
Here at Theunissen Aesthetic Plastic Surgery we will apply an appropriate peel (based on your skin abnormality) to the target treatment area. The chemical in the peel will cause the skin to exfoliate. This upper layer then sloughs off, removing dead, damaged skin cells. This in return allows your skin to rejuvenate itself, leading to a clearer, smoother, fresher, and less wrinkled skin appearance. Using the right chemical peel is paramount in order to attain the desired cosmetic goal. Dr. Theunissen and his team at Theunissen Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have immense skills utilizing neck and face chemical peel.
Who is the right candidate for a chemical peel
You may be a good candidate for skin care treatment with chemical peels if you suffer from skin imperfections such as discoloration, rough patches, flaky skin, acne scars, sun spots, fine lines, and similar conditions. During your initial consultation at Dr. Theunissen’s office, your skin will be examined closely in order to establish the most appropriate chemical peel treatment for you.

Types of chemical peels
We carry a variety of skin peels including Vitamin C treatment, Glycolic acid treatment, Salicylic acid treatment, Lactic acid treatment, TCA, and more to meet our patients’ needs. These are typically organized into three main categories based on their strength.
- Light peels – these peels remove the outer skin layer in order to achieve a glowing skin appearance. Light peel procedure can be performed over the lunch hour and work great to smooth and enhance the complexion of your skin. You need to repeat this treatment about once per month in order to maintain the benefits for your skin.
- Medium peels – these will reach deeper into your skin and require more time (usually an entire weekend) for maximum benefit. It is not uncommon for patients to experience significant discomfort about an hour after the peel has been removed. Dr. Theunissen recommends this type of peel for individuals who have darker pigmentation and deeper lines on the skin.
- Deep peels – this is the strongest level of chemical peel experience available. Deep peels are also the most effective chemical peels and carry the longest recovery time. Because this is a somewhat aggressive treatment, it comes with side effects such as itchiness and swelling that can last up to 3 weeks. This kind of treatment is typically recommended for individuals who have prominent acne scars, dark spots, deep scars, or other profound skin imperfections.
