CHIN AUGMENTATION – CHIN SURGERY – BATON ROUGE, LA

Chin Surgery / Chin Augmentation Overview

Mentoplasty and Genioplasty, commonly known as chin surgery and chin augmentation, is a cosmetic surgery that reshapes and enhances your chin by either reduction surgery on the bone or inserting an implant for volume and proper shape. Baton Rouge reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Taylor Theunissen, offers his expertise and experience in enhancing the size and shape of your chin through mentoplasty/genioplasty, which also strengthens the jaw line.

The surgical procedure is performed by inserting a sturdy, flexible implant under the chin or through the lower lip to make it look and feel like real tissue and bone. Apart from this, patients can also opt for injectable fillers if they wish to make only subtle changes to their chin.

Dr. Theunissen’s Approach

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Depending on the choice of procedure, Dr. Theunissen will use the relative technique for chin augmentation. In the case of implant insertion, a pocket is created in the space between the lower lip and jaw bone to hold the implant in place. Sometimes, for creating a groove to place the implant, the bone has to be shaved. Two common areas where incisions are usually made include inside the lip or the underside of the chin. After placing the implant, the incisions are sutured. The patient doesn’t have to worry about the scars as they are easily concealed in both areas.

You will see that only subtle changes are made to your jaw line through the procedure, but the result is highly noticeable. This is due to the years of experience and expertise of Dr. Theunissen in performing cosmetic surgeries.

DURING AND AFTER SURGERY

A chin surgery takes about 1 or 2 hours to complete and is always performed under general anesthesia. To avoid any complications, the patient is prescribed a liquid diet for the first 3 days so that the sutures doesn’t undergo any pressure and are healed properly. The patient will mostly likely feel nothing around the implant area due to numbness. However, the sensation will eventually return back within a few months.

It will take the implant about a year to settle properly into position after the surgery, and provide the desired outcome which is natural and soft in feeling.

CHIN AUGMENTATION FAQ

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MENTOPLASTY AND GENIOPLASTY?

Mentoplasty and Genioplasty are generally the same thing. Some may say genioplasty is a procedure through which the chin’s appearance is enhanced by reconstructing the jaw line. On the other hand, mentoplasty adds volume and refines the shape of the chin. Depending on your aesthetic goals and chin’s condition, single or both procedures may be done to achieve the best results. Dr. Theunissen does perform a technique where he breaks and moves the jaw forward into a better locations if needed,

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS EXCESS FAT AROUND THE CHIN?

In case you have excess fat around the chin, the surgeon may perform liposuction first before mentoplasty. For most effective results, the patient is usually advised to get the procedure done when they are close to their natural weight. This is because the fat deposits may compromise on the positive results of mentoplasty, or any other cosmetic surgery.

IS THE NUMBNESS AFTER THE PROCEDURE TEMPORARY?

Yes, it is and it will go away gradually with time. The numbness is due to damaged tissues around the implant, which has caused a temporary loss of sensation around the chin. You will also feel that the skin around is relatively tighter than it was before the procedure. This is a common post-surgery effect, and you shouldn’t panic if you experience it. However, it may take several months for the sensation to fully get back to normal.

WILL THERE BE ANY APPARENT SCARS AFTER THE SURGERY?

The whole purpose of a cosmetic surgery is to improve the aesthetic appeal of a particular area. Since mentoplasty is also a cosmetic surgery, you can rest assured there will be no scars that will be very visible. The incisions are made under the chin or inside of the lip, ensuring that scars remain hidden until they are completely healed.
