EYELID SURGERY BATON ROUGE
Eyelid Rejuvenation Surgery in Baton Rouge LA
Eyelid surgery is also known as Blepharoplasty. Women and men alike undergo Blepharoplasty usually because they feel as though they appear “tired” as a result of their lower eyelids being baggy and/or wrinkled. In the case of upper eyelids, they appear “hooded”. This is natural as we age because the collagen in our skin breaks down which produces sagging, bags, and wrinkles. Often times our bodies produce fat deposits under and above the eyes, and in conjunction with thinning skin, the fat deposits cause the skin sag which can exaggerate undesirable eyelid features. Dr. Theunissen specializes in eyelid rejuvenation and facial rejuvenation procedures to help erase these undesirable features for women and men alike. He also performs eyelid rejuvenation and facial rejuvenation procedures in office, so you never have to visit the hospital.
BENEFITS OF BLEPHAROPLASTY (EYELID REJUVENATION) WITH DR. THEUNISSEN:

Dr. Theunissen’s Approach
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
Blepharoplasty can be simply defined as the procedure to surgically repair or reconstruct an eyelid. It can be carried out on either the upper or the lower eyelids, or indeed even both. The nature of the procedure itself differs depending on the decision of the patient to choose whether it would be performed on the upper eyelid, the lower one or both. The incision spots can also differ depending on the structure of the eye or the eyelid. However, despite of these differences, all of the procedures in this category follow a similar approach.
The goal of the procedure is to maintain the natural look for the eye. This can be achieved through removing a certain unwanted amount of loose skin or tissue or by extracting or repositioning the deposits of fat within the eyelids.
The effects of blepharoplasty are usually only limited to the upper and lower eyelids. It is not used to treat other eye-related cosmetic issues like wrinkles, dark circles, or crow’s feet. However, those may be treated in conjunction with blepharoplasty. This is why the term eyelid rejuvenation is often used, because patients may need more than just blepharoplasty to achieve their desired appearance around the eyes. Based on the discretions and desires of the patients, Dr. Theunissen can also choose to utilize other techniques such as fat grafting or transfer or Botox treatment to create a more natural and rejuvenated look.
UPPER EYELID SURGERY
One of the common troubles most of our patients with upper eyelid issues encounter is the excess amount of skin that droops or hangs over the eyes. It’s effects are not limited to the appearance alone. It can also obstruct the patient’s vision.
To treat this problem, the doctor creates an incision along the eyelid’s natural fold to extract excess fat and tissue and eliminate any bulges. In some cases, instead of removing the fat, the fat tissues are repositioned. Additionally, he will also trim away any extra amount of skin and close the cut with fine sutures.
You can opt for the lower eyelid surgery if you want to eliminate the appearance of bulging and sagging underneath the eye. In the case of the lower eyelid surgery, you have two available options. The first option is to make an incision slightly below the line of the lower eyelash to remove any excess amount of fat, skin, or tissue. Another option for the patients with good skin elasticity is to go for a transconjunctival incision. This procedure involves a cut inside the lower eyelid and is an effective method to hide any resulting scar.
The lower eyelid lift, alone, cannot entirely eliminate any dark circles around the eyes. For that, the eyelid surgeon can recommend using a combination of lower eyelid blepharoplasty and some other procedures such as the injectable fillers or chemical peels.
CROWS FEET, WRINKLES, DARK CIRCLES, AND “HOLLOW EYES/FACE”
When it comes to blepharoplasty, a vast majority of Dr. Theunissen’s patients opt for a combination of eyelid surgery and a variety of other non-invasive procedures usually performed one after the other or at the same time. This is an effective way to treat a wide range of problems ranging from crow’s feet to dark circles. It is also effective to treat wrinkles, hollowed eyes, or sunken eye appearances. To ensure maximum satisfaction with the results of the procedure, Dr. Theunissen offers a variety of non-invasive options and Fat Grafting procedures in conjunction with blepharoplasty.

DURING AND AFTER EYELID SURGERY
The eyelid surgery usually requires general anesthesia. In the cases that involve the reconstruction of both the upper and lower eyelids, the doctor usually manages the upper eyelid first. The average time to conduct the operation is around 1-3 hours.
After the operation, patients are sent home for recovery. In the first few days succeeding the operation, there may be swelling or discoloration around the eye region. It is advisable to keep your head in an elevated position for those first few days. The doctor may recommend certain antibiotics or pain medications in case of any initial discomfort. You are advised not to perform any strenuous activities immediately after the operation.
Plan Your Eyelid Surgery
The average cost for the procedure can be around $6,000 if it’s performed on both the eyelids. Your personal insurance coverage will not, in the majority of cases, cover cosmetic eyelid surgery. However, there can be exceptions or exemptions for certain patients. Usually, the patients on whom the insurance coverage is applicable are those whose vision is affected due to drooping eyelids. Dr. Theunissen performs Eyelid Surgery in Baton Rouge, in his state-of-the-art, In-Office O.R., with the support of experienced and licensed staff, which also includes a full-time Anesthesiologist to ensure optimal care for each patient.

BLEPHAROPLASTY FAQ
WILL THE PROCEDURE RESULT IN EVIDENT OR HIGHY VISIBLE SCARING?
In most cases, eyelid surgery does not result in evident or visible scars. The reason for this is that the doctor conducts this procedure with extreme care and performs it in a way that the incisions follow the natural lines of the eyes. When the eyes are fully healed following the surgery, the incisions would not be noticeable, even to the naked eye.
WILL EYELID SURGERY ELIMINATE CROWS FEET?
The effects of blepharoplasty, when conducted on its own, are usually limited to the eyelids.
However, Dr Theunissen often combines the eyelid surgery with various non-invasive or non-surgical procedures like the Botox treatment and Fat Grafting. This is usually an effective way to eliminate wrinkles around the eyes or on the forehead. He can also utilize an injectable filler to create a soft and smooth appearance by adding volume to hollow areas as well.
ARE THERE ANY CHANCES OF POTENTIAL POST-SURGERY COMPLICATIONS?
It is extremely rare to have post-surgery complications or irritation after eyelid surgery. The eyes can be quite sensitive following a surgery. But if the patients religiously follow the set of instructions provided by the doctor, they can easily minimize or entirely eliminate any potential risks of developing eye infection. In the first few weeks after the surgery, the patients must take extreme care to protect their eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun or the wind.
CAN THE PROCEDURE LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT TO THE EYESIGHT?
The purposes of blepharoplasty are not solely limited to improving the cosmetic appearance. It has a variety of additional functional benefits. One of those benefits is an improvement in eyesight or vision. A lot of patients suffer from vision or eyesight problems due to excess hanging skin on the upper eyelid. Through eyelid surgery, they can remove that excess skin to regain normal vision.
Women may experience the frustration of dealing with the excess skin on the eyelids while applying eye makeup. They can also opt for blepharoplasty to find a solution to this problem.
