Labiaplasty – Vaginal Rejuvenation – Baton Rouge, LA

LABIAPLASTY / VAGINAL REJUVENATION OVERVIEW

Vaginal Rejuvenation or labiaplasty is a procedure which is used to correct misshaped, hanging or disproportionately large labia minora. Deformities of the labia can be the cause of embarrassment for many women. Patients who request for this procedure usually develop a long labia that protrudes beyond the outer labia of the vagina. This is not only embarrassing, but can also be very uncomfortable since the labia rubs against undergarments. The condition may also be uncomfortable for women during sexual activities.

Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Theunissen specializes in cosmetic surgery procedures and especially labiaplasty, which helps reduce the size of the labia minora or the inner lips of the vulva. This Labiaplasty procedure is purely cosmetic and is carried out to remove a wedge of labial tissue without affecting the functioning areas of the vagina.

DR. THEUNISSEN’S APPROACH

Labiaplasty Plastic Surgery Surgeon in Baton Rouge Dr. Taylor Theunissen

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Those women who are considering a labiaplasty need to first consult with their surgeon. While, in the past an amputation method was used to treat the condition. Nowadays, cosmetic surgeons such as Baton Rouge plastic surgeon, Dr. Taylor Theunissen use aesthetic reshaping techniques that not only reduces the size of the labia, but also protects the nerves in the process, so that a patient’s sexual sensation is not compromised after the procedure. Dr. Theunissen can preserve the natural color and contour of the pubic area, which results in minimal scarring and a more appealing look.

LABIAPLASTY SURGICAL PROCESS

During the procedure of a labiaplasty, Dr. Theunissen will use an advanced surgical tool called an Iris Scissors to reshape the inner folds of the labia. In this process, a “V” shape wedge will be made to the vaginal lips, and will be removed to reduce the size of the vaginal lips. During the procedure, the surgeon is going to carefully work to reshape or reconstruct the lips, making them more aesthetically pleasing. Lastly, dissolvable sutures are used to close the incisions. A second approach is to use a laser to reduce the size of the labia. This has proved to be an effective procedure in many patients, but it is only recommended in those cases where the defect to the labia is minimal.

DURING/AFTER SURGERY

A typical labiaplasty procedure normally takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete, and mainly depends on the complexity of the case. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and seldom requires for the patient to stay overnight. Women who go through the labia rejuvenation procedure need to avoid all activities which may cause bleeding or swelling to the area that has been operated on. This includes taking part in sexual activities, exercise, the use of tampons, douching or any other activities which may cause the sutures to tear, and cause complications. Your surgeon will recommend some post-op healing guidelines that will enable you to resume your normal activities within three to four months after the surgery. The sutures used are self-dissolving sutures, which means they will dissolve on their own. Because of the effectiveness of the procedure, women have experienced a surge in their self confidence levels thanks to an improved self image.

LABIAPLASTY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SHOULD I USED AN OBGYN OR COSMETIC SURGEON FOR LABIAPLASTY?

While there are many OBGYNs who can perform a labia rejuvenation, it is mostly considered a cosmetic procedure and while an OBGYN is qualified to perform the labiaplasty and surgically remove excess from within the labia, a cosmetic surgeon on the other hand will consider the aesthetic results of the procedure as well. This benefits the patient as it ensure that there will be minimum scarring or discoloration after the procedure, and that the vagina looks and feels natural after the labia rejuvenation procedure is carried out.

INSENSITIVITY ISSUES?

Similar to other surgical procedures, there will be some numbness around the area right after the labiaplasty procedure. But, the effects will be temporary as the skin and the vaginal lips heal fast. It is also important to understand that the surgical procedure performed by Baton Rouge plastic surgeon, Dr. Theunissen only affects the vaginal lips, while most sensitivity of the area is served by the clitoris. Having an experienced cosmetic surgeon carry out the labiaplasty procedure, will ensure minimal side effects once the procedure is over since they will be able to work around the area, minimizing the loss of sensitivity.

LABIAPLASTY AFFECT INTERCOURSE?

When the labiaplasty is performed by a skilled cosmetic surgeon it will definitely have a positive effect on your sexual performance. Since the elongated skin that grows out of the outer labia may be uncomfortable for women during intercourse, having the labiaplasty will certainly make sex more enjoyable. During the procedure, the clitoral region will be protected and the sensory nerves will be preserved so that your sexual activities aren’t impacted by the procedure.

BEFORE OR AFTER PREGNANCY?

Most surgeons would advise women to have a labiaplasty after their pregnancy is complete. However, if having an enlarged labia is bothersome and is the cause of pain, then the surgery is usually advised before a planned pregnancy. If the results of the labiaplasty is compromised due to the pregnancy, a second procedure may be performed to get the desired results.
