LIPOSUCTION – FAT REMOVAL – BATON ROUGE, LA
Liposuction Fat Removal Overview
For many women, simply having a healthy diet or working out everyday isn’t enough to eliminate excess deposits of fat and cellulite from the body. The pockets of fat around the lower abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, cheeks, and neck can be extremely hard to get rid of. Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon Dr. Theunissen uses power-assisted liposuction by using a thin tube-like device called a cannula that first loosens the fat cells and then removes them from the body with ease. Also known as Lipo or Lipoplasty, the procedure is gaining in popularity among our patients, and for good reason. A Liposuction does not only help you achieve a slim contour, it helps you reshape almost any part of your body by removing excess fat deposits from between the skin and muscles. Individuals who go through the procedure are able to maintain a stabilized weight, and live a healthy life.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
Depending on the physical condition of the patient, the desired results, and the type of liposuction surgery needed, the liposuction can be performed as an outpatient procedure.
Before the liposuction is carried, anesthesia will be administered by a licensed professional. The anesthesia will also vary depending on the amount of fat being removed and the degree of the surgery. Lipo is performed under general anesthesia sp the case will be carried out while the patient is asleep.
Once the anesthesia has been administered and has taken effect, the procedure will begin. Through small incisions, a device called a cannula, which is a small and stainless steel instrument that is attached to a suction pump or large syringe will be inserted to the areas where the excess fat needs to be removed. The length of the procedure varies from person to person and will depend on the amount of fat that has to be removed to create a smoother body contour.
DURING / AFTER SURGERY
As mentioned, liposuction is an outpatient cosmetic procedure which is performed under general anesthesia. The time of the procedure varies from patient to patient and will depend on the amount of excess fat that has to be removed. It can be carried out as a stand-alone procedure or can also be combined with other procedures to provide the patient with their desired results. In some cases, the surgeon may also advise that the liposuction procedure be carried out over a period of time for the health and safety of the patient. Once the procedure is over, patients are advised to wear a compression garment which helps the body adjust to their new weight and body shape. While bruising and swelling is expected after any surgical procedure, the swelling and bruising will start to subside within the first seven days of the procedure. That being said, the final results of the procedure will not be visible for another several months, depending on the complexity of the liposuction. While the liposuction procedure does not leave a small scar, the marks should fade in time.

LIPOSUCTION FAQ
IS THE PROCEDURE SAFE?
While Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon Dr. Theunissen uses safe surgical procedures, the same may not be said for some surgeons. This is the main reason why it is important for patients to do their research to find the best cosmetic surgeon in Baton Rouge for the job. Armed with years of experience under his belt, and supported with an exceptional team of nurses and after-care professionals, Dr. Theunissen has the experience and the expertise to get you the best results out of your liposuction procedure.
That being said, a liposuction is a complex procedure, so the patient must have realistic expectations. This is the reason why Baton Rouge Plastic Surgeon Dr. Theunissen and his team of experts counsel patients on what to expect after a liposuction procedure and the need for them to have realistic expectations after having liposuction.
ARE THE EFFECTS PERMANENT?
After a liposuction procedure it can take a few months for a person to start to see some noticeable change. That being said, a second liposuction procedure may not be required for many years if the proper diet and exercise plan is followed. While the fat cells that have been removed do not return, it is possible for patients to regain weight after the procedure if the remaining fat cells grow. This is why a patient should visit their surgeon after regular intervals post liposuction surgery.
CAN YOU REMOVE TOO MUCH FAT?
Is it possible to remove too much fat during the liposuction procedure? Well, the answer is yes. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, removing more than 10 pounds of excess fat is not recommended because of safety reasons. Even removing 10 pounds of fat is considered to be high volume lipo, which can increase the chances of complications during or after the procedure.
DOES LIPO TIGHTEN THE SKIN?
It should be mentioned here that a liposuction can only be used to remove excess pockets of fat in order to improve the shape and contour of the body, and cannot do anything to address the drooping skin which can follow a liposuction procedure. This is the reason why many patients opt for a tummy tuck, thigh lift or brachioplasty(arm lift) after the procedure. It is up to the patient to consult with their surgeon before the procedure on whether or not they should go for a arm lift, thigh lift, or tummy tuck after the liposuction.
Dr. Theunissen and his qualified staff are committed to ensuring his patients achieve the best results from their cosmetic surgery by offering the highest level of professional care throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the procedure and on-going support.
